D's Closet Makeover

Just because you have a large closet doesn't mean that you have to fill it. This is what I took away from helping my good friend makeover her closet. My goal was for her to be able to walk into her closet and see only the clothes that she truly enjoys wearing. She also uses this closet to house art supplies, gift wrapping supplies, projects she's working on and several other things, so I wanted to make the things she uses regularly easier to access.

Fortunately, she had many storage containers, although they weren't being utilized as well as they could be they meant this could be a no cost makeover. She had also been reading my series called "Your Closet" so she was mentally prepared to let some things go, and boy did she!

I will show you a before and after picture of each section of her closet and briefly describe what we did to get things in order:

Before

After
First we tackled her hanging wardrobe. She went through everything and if there was anything that didn't fit well, was out of style or she just didn't like it went into a big pile on her bed. I then combined all of her winter clothes on the least accessible hanging rod in her closet. I also folded all her sweatshirts and sweaters and utilized some wire shelving.

We also started going though some in season clothes in a bin and all her clothes in drawers. I decided to hang all of her jeans, capris and shorts. I also hung all of her nice spring summer tops with white hangers with like colors. As we went through this process, we wrote down any tops that didn't have coordinating bottoms and so on. She also had a dress that she loved with no matching shoes, so we took note of that as well.

Here I simply utilized the built in shoe rack that already existed.

You'll notice that the wire racks are much more spacious than before. She weeded through all the clothes to what she really needed. We also hung the jeans so they are easier to see and grab.

We cleaned out all of these little plastic drawer units and they worked great for craft supplies. Others were used for nail care, extra make-up and toiletries that she has stocked up on.

The green and blue plastic bins hold gift wrapping supplies along with the small clear bin which holds cards. These had been on the very top shelf, which made them hard to get to. The picture frames on the bottom right are projects that had been forgotten, now they are in plain view and she can get them done.

And this is the pile of clothes she will be donating!
